 Springfield Stadium & Oakfield-Frame & Fabric Jersey

May 2022

SPACE&PLACE (S&P) was commissioned to develop the vision for Springfield Stadium, aiming to transform it into the leading sport and wellbeing hub for north St Helier. Spaces for health outreach and “closer to home” services were central to this initiative. Extensive modifications and adaptations were undertaken on the existing building, including a mezzanine area, a new gym, and a studio. Furthermore, the project included refurbishing the changing rooms, entrance area, and reception. Both the car park and play area were remodelled, significantly enhancing access and overall functionality.

Meanwhile, the Oakfield project focused on enhancing “closer to home” services with the installation of a new hybrid 3G pitch and a state-of-the-art multi-sport dome. This sports dome utilized a modern frame and fabric structure supplied by Collinson’s, combining an open play barn with adjoining changing, reception, and studio areas. Additionally, the Oakfield development featured a full-size 3G pitch with catch netting and floodlighting. Located in a dense urban area, the project required careful design considerations for lighting, noise, and disruption. These aspects were meticulously addressed through consultations with a wide range of stakeholders.

As part of the Springfield Stadium reinvestment, significant upgrades were planned to enhance the overall sporting experience and comply with Step 3 FA requirements. External enhancements included upgraded security fencing and improvements to the spectator experience, with a focus on accessibility for people with disabilities. These improvements, prompted by Jersey Bulls’ transition to the English Football League, were scheduled for completion by May 2022.
