Whittingham Sports & Social Club

September 2023

Alongside Tibbalds and Campbell Reith, SPACE&PLACE (S&P) have designed a new Sports & Social Club for Homes England at the former Whittingham Hospital site in Preston. The new sports and social club building was created to meet specific needs and improve existing facilities. The clubhouse, primarily single-storey with a steward’s flat on the first floor, is centrally located to serve sports and social activities. This strategic positioning ensures optimal player and spectator experiences while enhancing site surveillance.

A senior football pitch, measuring 100 x 64 meters, is placed along the southern edge. Ball-stop nets and a fenced sports storage area have been added for convenience. Meanwhile, a multi-use games area (MUGA) and tennis court will be installed with weather-resistant surfaces, ensuring all-weather playability. An events, caravan, and camping area is set up in the southeastern corner, near the main entrance. The existing lit bowling green has been retained, while ancillary facilities, such as team shelters and storage, will be refurbished around it.

The car park, with 81 spaces, serves all user groups, with an additional 14 spaces near the MUGA/tennis court. Accessible parking and cycle spaces are positioned close to the clubhouse entrance. Furthermore, a landscape scheme was developed, featuring footpaths, a biodiversity area, perimeter planting, and a potential playground near the clubhouse.

The clubhouse entrance is designed to be visible and welcoming. A glazed entrance lobby provides a spacious, inviting area. An office at the entry point ensures efficient administrative support and surveillance. A foyer directs users to key areas, featuring a historic mosaic from the former hospital site. Separate male, female, and accessible toilets will be provided for convenience.

An events room, accommodating 150 people, includes a demountable stage, dance floor, and access to a terrace. A backstage room, club lounge, and dual bar areas offer versatile spaces for events and casual gatherings. The lounge connects to games and terrace areas, while a well-located cellar facilitates easy bar operations. A kitchen and cold store support daily food preparation and external catering for large events.
